Brain Traveling?

By Duane McCullough

The above images are views that I created in '73 in response to a theoritical future for those who believe in "brain traveling".

The image on the right was published in the centerfold of the Miami-Dade Community College magazine named SOUTHWIND. As Art Director of the campus magazine for two semesters, I had the opportunity to learn about graphic layout and page design.

What compelled me to illustrate these views was the idea that if some of us could continually control the imagery of traveling within our own brains, then the outside reality for these dream-scape travelers would be rather - let's say, ugly to those who are not part of the experience.

The first image in the "Retirement 2000" set of views illustrates a person who first enhances his brain traveling experience with "pot and beer" and music from the radio. And then, with more addictive chemicals and electrical powered information, eventually becomes so addicted that his body "evolves" into an ugly vegetable-like being.

The second image to the right under "HEADING..." illustrates a person that, either by choice or accident, became a real "Mr. Potato-head" when his life support machine supports a dimension of imaginary travel within his brain memory. The same brain elements that allow us to see a temporary unlimited universe in our early morning dreams are used by him to travel anytime or anywhere he can imagine. But for the outside observer, his life is an ugly site.

Again, the purpose of these illustrations were to show the ultimate downside of receiving too much chemical and/or electrical powered information - especially if one does not or can not share the experience.
